Abstract We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to have a right-angled Artin group as its braid group of braid index 4. This provides an answer to the question raised by Ghrist and Abrams who pioneered the study of graph braid groups and also provides a generalization of Farley and Sabalka's earlier work on trees. We also discuss corresponding conditions for lower braid indices.
