Generic elements in the mapping class group.

abstract:
We will give various definitions of what it might mean for an element to be generic in a finitely generated group. For example, one might look at the elements of word length at most n, or those arising from long random walks. We will then introduce the mapping class group and discuss certain sets of generic elements, in particular the pseudo-Anosov elements.
